Clean-Room Rotomat® PCB production

At its Lenzburg site, ABB Switzerland optimizes its production processes with an automated vertical carousel that stores blanko circuit boards of electronic semiconductor components in a clean state.

Automated order collection systems are becoming increasingly important. Developed by Hänel specifically for the Lenzburg Cleanroom, Rotomat® increases the storage capacity significantly. ABB's range of energy and automation products is huge. The Group develops and manufactures, among other things, high-voltage switches and microscopic high-performance semiconductors. Based in Lenzburg, ABB develops, manufactures and markets power grid systems, circuit boards and high-end semiconductors.

No crevices, no roughness

The purpose of the cleanroom is to prevent particles from sticking at any stage of the process. Eustachio Faggiano, ABB Process Engineer, said:
“The vertical carousel developed by Hänel for the cleanroom does not contain any roughness or dents. The surfaces are smooth and can be easily cleaned with isopropyl solutions.”

Faggiano is responsible for managing the Hänel CleanStore Rotomat® system in the clean room. The storage system meets the requirements of Clean-Room Class 5 in accordance with DIN EN ISO 14644-1 and HEPA H14 filter class.

Data loggers can be used to record measurement values. Hänel developed a state-of-the-art warehouse solution as a closed system. The double-walled design allows air to be cleaned through a filter inside the carousel. This ensures that no particles enter the cleanroom. Faggiano explains:
“Once loaded with printed circuit boards, calotte conveyors are stored in the Rotomat® CleanStore system until they are transferred to the vaporization chamber. At no time should the circuit boards be exposed to particulate matter.”

Empty calotte racks must also be protected from dust, so they too are stored in a vertical carousel. The space-saving Hänel Rotomat® CleanStore is a solution used in the electronics, semiconductor and pharmaceutical industries. At ABB, the calotte racks for printed circuit boards were previously retained in the traditional shelving system.
